AI writing assistant for your Word documents

A panel beside the WordCraft editor that summarizes, proofreads, rewrites and translates the document you are working on, drafts new text from a brief, and answers questions about it. It uses OpenAI, Google Gemini or OpenRouter models on your own key; your browser talks to the provider directly.

What can the assistant do with a document?

Each task takes extra instructions (“use British spelling”, “keep it under 300 words”). Models can still be wrong, so read the result before you use it, especially names, numbers and quotations.

How it works with the editor

  1. In the editor, click AI assistant in the top bar. The panel opens on the right; the document resizes to fit.
  2. Open the settings (gear icon), choose a provider and paste your API key. The key field links to the provider’s key page.
  3. Save your document in WordCraft with File › Save (Ctrl/⌘+S). It downloads as usual, and its text appears in the panel. You can also choose a file, drop one on the panel, or paste text, for example a single section you copied from WordCraft.
  4. Pick a task, set its option (length, style or language), add instructions if you like, and press the button (or Ctrl/⌘+Enter).
  5. Copy the result, download it as .md or .txt, or click Open in WordCraft.

Getting the result back into WordCraft

Open in WordCraft hands the result to the editor as a Markdown file, the same way as dropping a file on the page, and WordCraft turns its headings, lists, tables, bold and italic into a formatted document. It takes the place of the document that is open; if that one has unsaved changes, WordCraft asks you to save it first. Then press Ctrl/⌘+S: WordCraft downloads the new document as a .docx.

To change only part of a document, select that part in WordCraft, copy it (Ctrl/⌘+C), choose Paste text in the panel, run the task, then copy the result and paste it back over your selection.

OpenAI is called through its Responses API, Gemini through generateContent, and OpenRouter through its chat completions API, which reaches models from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, DeepSeek, Mistral, xAI and others. The custom option works with any service that implements OpenAI-style /chat/completions and accepts browser requests.

Your API keyStays in your browser. Sent only to the provider, in the request header.

The provider’s own terms and data policy apply to what you send them. For confidential documents, send only what the model needs: paste the relevant section instead of the whole file, or remove names and numbers first.

FAQ

Is the AI writing assistant free?

wordcraft.run charges nothing and adds no markup, because the request never passes through us. You pay your AI provider for what you use at their normal API prices. Summarizing or proofreading a few pages costs a fraction of a cent with a fast model; rewriting or translating a long document costs more, because the whole text comes back.

Where is my API key stored?

In your browser only. By default it lasts for the current tab (sessionStorage). Tick “Remember my key on this device” to keep it in localStorage instead, and use “Forget all keys” in the panel settings to delete it.

Which files can it read?

Word documents (.docx, .docm, .dotx, .dotm), OpenDocument text (.odt), Markdown, plain text and HTML. The panel reads the text in your browser, keeping headings, lists and tables, and sends that text, not the file. For an old .doc or an .rtf file, open it in WordCraft and save it: File › Save downloads a .docx the panel can read. Up to 600,000 characters of text go in one request, about 150,000 tokens.

Can the AI edit my document directly?

Not in place. The WordCraft web build has no interface for other programs to change an open document. What the panel can do is open its result in WordCraft as a new document (it takes the place of the one that is open, after WordCraft offers to save it), or you copy the result and paste it where you want it.

Does it keep my formatting?

It keeps the structure: headings, lists, tables, bold and italic travel as Markdown, and WordCraft turns them back into Word formatting when you open the result. Fonts, colours, page layout, pictures, comments and tracked changes are not sent to the model, so they are not in the result.

Why did a rewrite or translation stop halfway?

Every model has a limit on how much it writes in one answer. The panel marks a result that hit the limit. Paste one section at a time, or choose a model with a larger output limit.

Which model should I pick?

For OpenAI, gpt-6.1-sol writes well and handles long documents; gpt-6-luna is the low-cost choice. For Google, gemini-3.8-flash is fast and inexpensive. On OpenRouter you can also pick Anthropic Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral or xAI models. “Load models” lists everything your key can use.

Why does a request fail with a CORS or network error?

The custom provider option needs an API that accepts requests from browsers. OpenAI, Google Gemini and OpenRouter all do. Some self-hosted or regional gateways don’t; use one of the built-in providers instead.
